Pruning for Structure, Not Just Looks

Tree trimming and pruning in Ocala is mostly about oaks. A well-pruned live oak can stand for generations and ride out strong wind; a neglected one with two equal trunks and long heavy limbs is far more likely to split. Good pruning removes the right branches at the right places, follows the ANSI A300 standard and leaves the tree able to seal its cuts. Bad pruning, such as topping, flush cuts against the trunk or stripping out all the interior branches (sometimes called lion-tailing), weakens trees and invites decay.

Live oaks

UF/IFAS recommends pruning young live oaks every year for the first three years after planting and then about every five years until the tree is around 30, so that one dominant trunk develops and low limbs that will later block driveways are removed early. Live oak branches spread wide, so raising the canopy to roughly 14 or 15 feet over drives and streets is common. On mature live oaks the work is usually reducing a few long, heavy limbs over the house and removing dead wood, not thinning the whole crown.

Laurel oaks and other fast growers

Laurel oaks put on wood quickly and break more easily. Pruning them on a regular cycle keeps the cuts small, which matters because large wounds on laurel oaks often start decay. Reducing end weight on long limbs that hang over roofs and pool cages lowers the chance of a branch failing in a summer thunderstorm. When a laurel oak already has major cavities, pruning can only buy time, and we will say so.

Clearance work

Branches rubbing a roof scrape shingles and give squirrels a ramp; limbs over a screened pool enclosure drop debris and can puncture the screen in wind. Clearance pruning cuts these back to a lateral branch or the trunk collar rather than leaving stubs. Branches near power lines are the utility's job, so we do not prune within 10 feet of an energized line. The service drop from the pole to the house is different: SECO Energy, for example, asks members to keep that line clear and will do a free temporary disconnect so the work can be done safely.

What Trimming and Pruning Includes

Pruning jobs are written up by what each cut is meant to do.

Structural pruning

Choosing one leader and shortening competing trunks on young and middle-aged oaks to prevent splits later.

Crown cleaning

Removing dead, broken, crossing and diseased branches throughout the canopy.

Crown raising

Lifting low limbs to clear driveways, sidewalks, roofs, mowers and horse trailers.

Limb reduction

Shortening heavy limbs over houses and pool cages back to a healthy lateral branch to cut end weight.

Pine limbing

Removing dead lower branches and broken tops on pines near structures.

Ornamental pruning

Crape myrtle, magnolia and holly shaping without cutting large branches back to stubs.

How a Pruning Job Works

1. Look at each tree

We identify the species and note dead wood, weak forks, decay and limbs over targets.

2. Agree on goals

Clearance, storm-readiness, light for the lawn, or structure for a young tree: the goal decides which cuts are made.

3. Written scope

The quote says which branches come off and roughly how much of the canopy, so you know what the tree will look like.

4. Pruning

Cuts are made just outside the branch collar or back to a lateral branch, with heavier limbs lowered on ropes.

5. Haul-off and cleanup

Brush is chipped and hauled or left as mulch, and the lawn, beds and roof are cleared of debris.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning

No topping, ever

Topping causes weak regrowth and decay; reduction cuts to a lateral branch do the job properly.

Pruning cycles that fit the tree

We suggest when to come back based on the species and age, not on a sales calendar.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

How much of a tree can be trimmed at once?

Industry guidance is to remove as little live canopy as the goal requires, and generally no more than about a quarter of the leaves on a mature tree in one season. Removing too much stresses the tree and triggers weak sprouts. Dead wood does not count toward that limit. Inside Ocala city limits this matters legally too: the city's tree permit rules treat topping, or removing more than a quarter of a tree's foliage in a year, as unauthorized removal.

Is it OK to prune oaks in summer in Ocala?

Yes, oaks here can be pruned year-round. Many people schedule larger pruning in late winter or spring so heavy limbs are reduced before hurricane season, but a branch that is cracked or rubbing the roof should not wait.

Will pruning make my tree safer in a hurricane?

Proper pruning helps. UF/IFAS research after Hurricane Andrew found that pruned trees survived at a higher rate than unpruned ones, and well-structured trees with one dominant trunk hold up better. No pruning makes a tree windproof, though.

Can you remove Spanish moss?

Spanish moss is not a parasite and does not kill the tree, but heavy clumps add weight and can shade interior branches. Some gets removed naturally during pruning; stripping all of it is rarely worth the cost.

Do you trim crape myrtles?

Yes, but not by cutting every branch back to a knuckle. Removing crossing branches, suckers and seed heads keeps a crape myrtle healthy and keeps its natural shape.
