Lakes, Trail and Woods

Tree Service in Hernando means working around water and woods. This Citrus County community covers about 35.6 square miles, and nearly 11 percent of that is water, mainly Tsala Apopka Lake along its eastern edge, part of the Withlacoochee River system. Many homes sit on lakefront lots or on wooded parcels set back from US 41. Elite Tree Service Ocala works in Hernando on removals, pruning, storm cleanup and stump grinding.

Lakefront trees

The Tsala Apopka chain is a broad, marshy lake system, and the soil near its shores tends to stay wet. Trees there, often cypress, laurel oaks, water oaks and maples, grow fast but may root shallowly. When we inspect a lakefront tree, we look at how firmly it is anchored, any recent change in lean, and whether decay is present in the trunk or major limbs. Trees that are sound but heavy on the water side can often be thinned and kept.

Along the trail

The Withlacoochee State Trail, a 46-mile path converted from an old Atlantic Coast Line Railroad line, passes through the area. Homes that back onto the trail corridor may have trees along the property line. Trees on the trail side belong to the state, so if one of those threatens your property, contact the trail managers before any work. Trees on your side of the line are yours to manage.

Once a city

Hernando was an incorporated city until it was disincorporated in the 1970s, and it was home to the Ted Williams Museum until 2006. Today it is governed by Citrus County, so county rules apply to tree work in rights-of-way and on commercial property.

Wooded lots

Away from the lake, many Hernando lots are wooded with pines and oaks. Dead pines near homes, lightning-struck trees and oaks leaning over roofs make up most of the removal work. On a wooded lot, a tree may look healthy from the ground but have a dead top that only shows from the street or a neighbor's yard; it is worth looking up from a distance every so often.

How we work

1. Walk the property with you and look at every tree you are concerned about. 2. Write up the work, cleanup and price in a clear estimate. 3. Do the work with the least disturbance to soft lakefront ground. 4. Chip and haul debris, or leave wood if you want it. 5. Grind stumps if requested.

Storms from the Gulf side

Hernando sits in Citrus County, closer to the Gulf coast than Ocala, so tropical systems coming ashore along the Nature Coast can arrive with more wind. Preparation is simple and worth doing each spring: remove dead limbs, cut back branches over the roof, check large trees for decay and lean, and take down trees that are already failing. UF/IFAS research found that older trees, decay, codominant stems and cut roots all raise the risk that a tree fails in high wind.

Tree Removal in Ocala, FL

Hernando Questions

Can you remove a tree that is on soft lakefront ground?

Yes. On soft ground we avoid driving heavy equipment across the yard. Trees are usually climbed and taken down in sections, with wood carried or winched out to firmer ground.

A tree on the trail side is hanging over my yard. Can you cut it?

You can generally trim branches that cross onto your property. The tree itself belongs to the state, so contact the trail managers about removal. If they approve work, or if the branches over your yard just need trimming, we can help.

Do you travel to Hernando from Ocala?

Yes. Hernando, Citrus Springs and Dunnellon are part of our regular western route.

Should I remove a big oak before hurricane season?

Only if it has real defects, such as decay, cracks, a worsening lean or a dead top. A healthy, well-structured oak is often better pruned than removed, since its roots hold soil and its canopy shelters the house. We can tell you which category your tree falls into.

Can you grind stumps near the lake?

Yes, as long as the ground is firm enough for the grinder. On very soft ground we may wait for a dry spell or cut the stump flush instead.
