Why Stumps Get Ground
Stump grinding turns a stump into wood chips with a machine that has a spinning, toothed wheel. The wheel cuts the stump and the main roots down below ground level so the spot can be covered with soil and sod, planted or paved over. In Ocala's sandy soils, an oak stump left in place can take years to rot, sends up sprouts, and becomes a trip hazard and a mower obstacle; pine stumps break down faster but attract termites and other insects while they do.
How deep and how wide
Most residential stumps are ground roughly 6 to 12 inches below grade, deeper if you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot or lay pavers. The grinder also follows surface roots out from the stump for a few feet when asked. Grinding is not the same as digging out the entire root system; roots further out are left to decay underground, which is normal and causes no harm in most yards.
Palm stumps
Palms do not have woody root systems like oaks; their roots are many thin fibers. A palm stump grinds quickly. If the palm died of Ganoderma butt rot, UF/IFAS advises removing as much of the stump and root mass as possible and not reusing the chips as mulch, because the fungus lives in the soil and can affect a new palm planted in the same spot.
Before the grinder starts
Underground lines are marked first through Sunshine 811, Florida's call-before-you-dig system. We ask about septic tanks and drain fields, which are common on larger Marion County lots, and about irrigation lines, which often run right past a stump. Gate width matters too: we measure it at the estimate so the right size machine comes.
Stump Grinding Options
Choose what you want done with the stump and the space.
Single stump grinding
One stump ground below grade, chips raked into the hole or hauled away.

Several stumps on one visit; extra stumps usually cost much less than the first.
Surface root grinding
Grinding visible roots that run across the lawn or lift a walkway.
Palm stump removal
Palm stumps ground out; root mass removed where butt rot was present.
Chip removal and fill
Hauling the chip pile and backfilling with soil so the spot is ready for sod or planting.
Old stump clearing
Stumps left by previous owners, builders or storms, including ones partly hidden in beds.

How Stump Grinding Works
1. Measure and mark
We measure the stump diameter and the gate, and check for septic, irrigation and other underground lines.
2. Locate utilities
Sunshine 811 is contacted so buried electric, gas, water and communication lines are marked before grinding.
3. Grind
The stump and main surface roots are ground below grade to the depth on the quote.
4. Chips and fill
Chips are left in the hole, spread in beds or hauled off, and soil is added if agreed.

Why Choose Us for Stump Grinding
Depth agreed up front
Six inches for sod, deeper for a new tree: the quote says how far down.
Underground lines located first
Utilities, septic components and irrigation are found before the grinder touches the ground.
Stump Grinding Questions
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
Not exactly. Grinding cuts the stump and top roots into chips below ground, which is what most homeowners need. Full removal pulls out the root ball with an excavator and leaves a large hole; it is usually reserved for construction sites.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Most oaks and pines will not regrow once the stump is ground below grade. Some species send up a few sprouts from remaining roots for a season; those can simply be mowed or clipped.
Can I plant a new tree where the old one was?
Yes, after the stump is ground deep and most of the chips are replaced with soil. Planting a little to one side of the old stump is often easier. After a palm with Ganoderma butt rot, plant something other than a palm in that spot.
What do I do with the wood chips?
They make good mulch for beds and around trees once they have aged a few weeks. If you want them gone, hauling is listed on the quote. Chips from a palm with butt rot should not be reused.
