A Town Shaded by Its Trees
Tree Service in Micanopy calls for a light touch. The town, on the southern edge of Alachua County between Ocala and Gainesville, is described as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the interior of Florida, and its downtown Micanopy Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. With only about 650 residents in roughly a square mile, the big oaks along its streets and around its old homes are a big part of what makes the town feel the way it does. Elite Tree Service Ocala approaches work here with preservation first.
Preserve first, remove when necessary
Old oaks can often be kept safe for many more years with the right pruning. That means removing deadwood, reducing the ends of long, heavy limbs, and clearing branches from roofs and chimneys. Cabling between major limbs is sometimes an option for a tree with a weak fork that is otherwise healthy. When a tree is too far gone, with major decay, root failure or a crack through the trunk, we explain why and plan a careful removal.
Working around historic structures
In a historic district, the buildings under the tree may be irreplaceable. Our approach: 1. Inspect the tree and note every structure, fence and walkway in the fall zone. 2. Plan to climb and rig rather than fell, lowering each piece to the ground. 3. Protect lawns and old brick with mats where equipment must pass. 4. Keep chippers and trucks on the street when possible. 5. Leave the site clean, with no gouges in the lawn or chips in the beds.
Local review
Work affecting historic properties or trees near public streets may be subject to town review. Before planning any significant removal, check with the Town of Micanopy about what applies. For hazardous trees on single-family lots, Florida Statute 163.045 limits local permit requirements when the owner has a signed risk assessment from an ISA-certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect.
Paynes Prairie nearby
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, close by, is a major outdoor draw for the whole county. Its open grasslands and wetlands mean wind can sweep across before reaching the trees at the town's edge, so properties on that side are worth checking for loose limbs before storm season.
Old pruning wounds
Many of Micanopy's older trees were pruned decades ago by methods that are no longer recommended, such as flush cuts and topping. Those old wounds often decay. When we look at a large old oak, we check each major old cut for soft wood, cavities or fungus. A tree can carry a fair amount of hidden decay and remain sound, but where decay runs into a main limb over a house or street, that limb may need to be shortened or removed.

Micanopy Questions
Can an old oak with a weak fork be saved?
Sometimes. If the tree is otherwise healthy, reducing weight on the limbs and installing cables can lower the risk of the fork splitting. If the fork is already cracked or decayed, removal may be safer. We look at it and explain the options.
Is Spanish moss hurting my trees?
No. Spanish moss is an air plant that does not take nutrients from the tree. Very heavy moss can indicate a thinning canopy, so it is a cue to check the tree's health, but the moss itself is not the problem.
Do you come up from Ocala to Micanopy?
Yes. Micanopy is part of our regular service area, along with McIntosh and the other towns along US 441.
How do you keep the work from damaging my lawn and walkways?
We keep trucks on the street when we can, lay mats where equipment has to cross grass, and lower wood rather than drop it near old brick or stone. Cleanup includes raking and blowing off walks, beds and porches.
