Deciding a Tree Should Go

Tree removal is the right call when a tree is dead, structurally unsound, or growing somewhere it will keep causing damage. In Ocala the usual candidates are laurel oaks past middle age, pines that have died after lightning or bark beetles, palms with Ganoderma butt rot or freeze-killed crowns, and trees with roots under a foundation, pool deck or septic system. A tree that leans has not always failed; one that has recently started to lean, with soil heaving on the opposite side, has.

Signs worth acting on

Look for cavities and soft wood at the base or where large limbs join the trunk, mushrooms or shelf-like conks on the trunk or roots, long vertical cracks, bark falling away in sheets, and dead branches at the top of the crown. On pines, needles fading from green to rust over a few weeks and small pitch tubes on the bark point to beetles; a dead pine dries and becomes brittle fast. On laurel oaks, UF/IFAS notes that even small injuries can start decay columns that run many feet inside the trunk, so a sound-looking exterior can hide a hollow core.

How a removal is done

Open ground lets a tree be felled in one piece toward a clear landing area. Most Ocala yards are not like that: there is a house on one side, a pool cage or fence on another and a neighbor's roof beyond. Then the tree is climbed or reached by lift and taken down from the top in sections, with heavier pieces lowered on ropes rather than dropped. For very large trees over a structure, a crane is sometimes the safest way to lift sections out. The method is chosen at the estimate and written on the quote.

Rules and wires

Inside city limits, a City of Ocala tree removal permit is needed for trees 4 inches or more in diameter at 4.5 feet, unless the home is a single-family house on R-1, R-1A or R-1AA zoning under 3 acres; the permit is issued to the contractor, takes at least 10 business days, and emergency applications go in person. In unincorporated Marion County, single-family parcels are exempt from the county's tree removal permit, and dead trees or trees posing an immediate threat are exempt as well. HOAs in many subdivisions still require approval before a tree is removed or replaced. Florida's section 163.045 allows a single-family homeowner to remove a tree without a local permit when an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents that it poses an unacceptable risk. Trees with limbs in power lines are handled with the utility first; inside Ocala's electric territory, a dead or defective tree that could strike a primary line can be reported through the city's hazardous tree removal request.

What Tree Removal Covers

Removal jobs around Ocala usually fall into one of these types.

Laurel and water oak removal

Fast-growing oaks with hollows, splits or dead tops, often over houses on older lots; taken down in sections with limbs roped to the ground.

Dead pine removal

Pines killed by lightning, bark beetles, drought or root damage, removed before the wood turns brittle and starts shedding.

Palm removal

Palms with butt rot, lethal decline or freeze damage, removed with the stump so the root mass does not linger in the bed.

Tight-access and over-structure removals

Trees between houses, over pool enclosures or behind fences, dismantled piece by piece; a crane is used when it is the safest way.

Multiple-tree and fence-line removals

Several trees along a property line or pasture fence, priced per tree on one quote.

Wood and debris handling

Brush chipped, logs cut to firewood length, everything hauled or left as you prefer.

How a Removal Goes

1. Walk the tree and the site

We check the species, decay, lean and what sits under and around the tree, then plan where each piece goes and how the crew gets in.

2. Confirm rules and utilities

City, county or HOA requirements are discussed, and any line near the tree is sorted out with the utility before work.

3. Itemized quote

Each tree, the method, the stump, the cleanup and the price, in writing. You approve it before a date is set.

4. Takedown

The tree is felled whole only where there is safe room; otherwise it comes down in sections with ropes and rigging.

5. Cleanup and walk-through

Brush and wood are handled the way the quote says, the area is raked and blown, and you look it over with us.

Tree Removal Questions

How long does a typical removal take?

A small or medium tree with open access is often finished in a few hours, cleanup included. A large oak over a house, taken down in sections, can take most of a day or longer. Your quote gives a realistic estimate.

Can a tree be removed if it is close to my house?

Yes. That is what sectional removal is for: the tree is dismantled from the top down and pieces are lowered on ropes instead of falling. In some cases a crane lifts sections over the house.

What about my neighbor's tree hanging over my roof?

Florida generally lets you trim branches that overhang your property back to the line, at your own cost, as long as the work does not kill or seriously damage the tree. Removing the whole tree requires the owner's permission. Talking with the neighbor first usually saves trouble.

Do you remove the stump too?

Only if you want it. Stump grinding is quoted as its own line so you can decide. Leaving the stump is cheaper; grinding lets you replant, sod or build over the spot.

Is a dead tree more expensive to remove?

Often, yes. Dead wood is brittle and can break unpredictably, so it may not be safe to climb and may need a lift or more rigging. HomeGuide notes that dead trees often cost more to remove because of the added safety risk, which is one reason to deal with a dying pine sooner rather than later.
