Lake Lots, Wind and Water
Tree Service in Ocklawaha is mostly lakefront work. The community sits on the north shore of Lake Weir in southeastern Marion County, with Bowers Lake on its western edge, and nearly a third of its total area is water. Homes face the lake with trees between the house and the shoreline, and those trees take the full force of wind coming across open water. Elite Tree Service Ocala handles pruning for views and wind, removals of failing shoreline trees, and cleanup after storms.
Wind across a big lake
Lake Weir covers about 5,685 acres with roughly 38 miles of shoreline. Wind that crosses that much open water hits the first line of trees on the shore without anything to slow it. Shoreline trees often respond by growing a lean or a lopsided crown away from the water, which concentrates weight on one side. Thinning the crown so wind passes through, removing dead and broken limbs, and reducing long limbs on the heavy side lower the load. Trees with root decay or a root plate that has started to lift are better removed.
Seasonal homes
The 2020 census counted 838 housing units in Ocklawaha, and 22.7 percent were vacant, which usually reflects second homes and seasonal places. If you are not here year-round, a tree problem can go unnoticed for months. A spring check before storm season, and a quick look after any major storm, is a sensible routine. We can send photos and a written estimate if you are away, and schedule work for when you arrive or while you are gone.
Views without harm
Many lake owners want a clearer view of the water. There is a right and a wrong way to do that. Removing a few lower limbs, thinning the crown and selectively taking out small understory trees can open a view while keeping shade and shoreline stability. Topping trees or stripping them bare creates weak regrowth and can kill them. Be aware that shoreline vegetation and work near the water can be subject to state and county rules, so ask before clearing anything at the water's edge.
Some local history
Ocklawaha has had a post office since 1884 and is named for the nearby Ocklawaha River. It is best known for 1935, when federal agents fought a long shootout there with Fred Barker and his mother, Kate 'Ma' Barker. The community was listed as a census-designated place for the first time in 2020.

Ocklawaha Questions
Can I clear trees to get a better view of Lake Weir?
Usually you can improve the view by thinning and raising limbs rather than removing trees. Work right at the shoreline may be covered by state or county rules, so check before cutting vegetation at the water's edge. We can describe the planned work in writing if you need to ask.
My shoreline oak leans toward the lake. Is it dangerous?
A long-standing lean is common on the shore and not always a problem. A lean that has recently increased, with cracked or lifted soil on the land side, is a warning sign. Have it looked at before the next storm.
Do you work around the rest of Lake Weir?
Yes. We work all around the lake, including Ocklawaha, the Weirsdale side and the communities to the east.
How do you get equipment to a lot that slopes down to the water?
On steep or soft lake lots we usually avoid driving heavy machines across the yard. Trees are climbed and taken down in sections, and wood is carried or winched up to the street side. If a lot has firm, level access, we may use more equipment to speed things up. The estimate explains the method.
