Old Homes and Older Trees

Tree Service in McIntosh is mostly about big, old trees. The town was platted in 1885, has had a post office since 1887 and was incorporated in 1913, and many of its homes and yard trees date back generations. With only about 460 residents in less than a square mile, nearly every large tree is something the neighbors know by sight. Elite Tree Service Ocala approaches work here with that in mind: prune to keep a tree healthy where we can, and remove only when the tree truly can't be kept safe.

Pruning before removing

Old oaks can carry a lot of deadwood and still be structurally sound. Removing dead limbs, reducing the length of long horizontal limbs that reach over roofs, and clearing weight off the ends of branches can extend a tree's life by years. ANSI A300, the national pruning standard, calls for cuts just outside the branch collar, and common practice is to avoid removing more than about a quarter of the live canopy at one time. That kind of measured work is the right starting point for most of McIntosh's older trees.

When removal is the answer

Some trees are past saving. Large cavities in the main trunk, root decay with fungus at the base, cracks running through major unions, and leans that are getting worse are all reasons to plan a removal. On a small historic lot, taking down a big tree usually means climbing it and lowering every piece by rope to protect porches, roofs and old fencing. The estimate describes how that will be done.

Near the lake

Orange Lake borders the town on the east. Trees close to the shoreline grow in soil that stays wet for longer periods, and the open water lets wind build across it. Lakefront trees that lean toward the water or have exposed roots should be checked before the summer storm season.

Spanish moss is not the problem

Many old McIntosh oaks are draped in Spanish moss, and owners sometimes worry it is killing the tree. It isn't. Spanish moss is an air plant that takes nothing from the tree. It does tend to grow thicker on trees with thin canopies, because more light reaches the inner branches. So heavy moss can be a sign that a tree is declining for other reasons, and that is worth a look. Removing moss by hand is optional and usually unnecessary.

McIntosh Questions

Can you prune my old oak without making it look butchered?

Yes. Good pruning takes out dead, weak and conflicting limbs and shortens a few long ones, leaving a natural shape. Topping and lion-tailing, where most interior limbs are stripped, are avoided because they weaken the tree.

My big oak has a hollow in the trunk. Does it have to come down?

Not always. Many trees live for decades with a hollow if enough sound wood surrounds it. The size of the hollow compared to the trunk, and whether there are cracks or fungus, decides it. We look at the tree and explain what we find.

Do you work in other small towns north of Ocala?

Yes. Besides McIntosh, we regularly work in Reddick, Citra, Anthony and across the county line in Micanopy.

When is the best time of year to prune oaks here?

Oaks in north central Florida can be pruned most of the year. Late winter, before spring growth, makes it easier to see the structure and avoids peak nesting season. Dead or hazardous limbs should come off whenever they are found, regardless of season.

Can you take a big tree down without bringing heavy trucks onto my lawn?

Often, yes. On small historic lots we can climb the tree, lower pieces by rope and carry them to a chipper parked on the street. It takes longer than driving equipment into the yard, and the estimate reflects that, but it spares old lawns, walks and septic areas.
